Covent House has a wide range of complementary therapies, counselling approaches, and alternative health care practices under one roof.

Complementary therapies aim to work with conventional medicine to help bring about the best state of health and wellbeing possible.

Traditional Chinese Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a system of healing which has been practised in China and other Eastern countries for thousands of years, and is now increasingly influential in the West. Although often described simply as a means of pain relief, it is in fact used to approach a very wide range of physical and emotional conditions. Its focus is always on improving the health and well-being of the patient overall, rather than focussing on isolated symptoms.

According to traditional Chinese philosophy, our health is dependent on our body's motivating energy – known as Qi – moving in a smooth and balanced way through a series of channels beneath our skin. The flow of Qi can be disturbed by a number of factors; these can include emotional states such as anxiety, stress, fear and grief as well as hereditary factors, poor nutrition, infections, poisons and trauma – and even weather conditions. By inserting fine needles into these channels of energy, an acupuncturist can stimulate the body's own healing responses and help restore its natural balance.

Counselling and Psychotherapy

Integrative Psychotherapy

Hello, I’m Matt. I’m an integrative psychotherapist working in person in Machynlleth as well as online and over the phone. I work in an integrative way. This means I’ve trained in a range of psychotherapeutic approaches and I draw from them, or integrate them, differently with each person I see. I take this approach because I think we are each unique in our experiences, needs and hopes for the future, so different things are likely to help each of us at different points in our lives. If we were to meet we would settle into a co-created process that fits you. I work holistically, by which I mean it feels important to me that we would pay attention to every part of you and your experiencing and not simply try to treat a ‘symptom’. I’ll be doing my utmost to travel alongside you compassionately, thoughtfully and intelligently. My work is underpinned by respect, care and curiosity, non-judgement and open-heartedness. You are welcome whatever your experiences, feelings or worries are, and however they show up.

Person-Centred Counselling

Person-centred counselling is a well established relational therapy, its non directive nature invites individuals to find their own unique responses and solutions to the situations that they are facing. The non-judgemental atmosphere imparted throughout the therapy allows individuals to find their own voice and access ways of being in the world that feel authentic and life affirming.

The philosophy under-pinning the Person Centred Approach is that all of us carry within ourselves innate resources for healing and growth. Along life’s journey however we can lose touch with the aspects of ourselves that are needed to navigate some of life’s biggest challenges, such as depression, low self esteem, anxiety and relationship difficulties. The totally accepting nature of the therapy facilitates growth by supporting the individual in finding their own way back to themselves.

Psychospiritual counselling and coaching

Psychospiritual counselling and coaching focuses on the whole person - mind, body, spirit, and environment - to help develop personal presence and psychological and spiritual growth, development and realisation.

It is particularly suitable for people who, besides wanting to address their life challenges or emotional difficulties, would like to explore the deeper meaning and purpose of our lives, our relationships, consciousness, and reality as a whole. Working with presence means we allow whatever wants to arise in our present experience to deepen. We explore thoughts, emotions, body sensations, breathing, energy, dreams, and movement, and where the counsellor helps the client orientate to deeper levels of truth.

The approach is not associated with any particular religion and does not require or promote any particular religious or spiritual beliefs.

Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral Therapy is a powerful hands-on therapy which uses light touch to stimulate the body’s own self-healing abilities. The work derives from discoveries made by osteopaths more than 100 years ago which show that in health all living tissues express a subtle rhythmic motion called ‘Primary Respiration’. The full and balanced expression of this motion is fundamental to good health. However, factors such as accidents, injuries, stresses, toxicity etc, may compromise the expression of Primary Respiration leading to a wide range of physical and emotional problems. In treatment, the therapist identifies these areas of stress and strain and encourages a return to health.

Holistic massage and Myofascial release

These therapies are hands-on, using an enquiring touch to guide you into your own release from restrictions; to find deep relaxation in a supportive and nourishing environment.

Whether you are simply in need of some balancing and restoring, a nervous system reset, or are recovering from an injury, experiencing headaches, chronic pain, postural imbalances, or even such issues as snoring or fatigue, these therapeutic approaches can work together or apart to allow unconscious holding patterns to shift.

Megan’s approach to this work is deep yet subtle; following the principle that release achieved from within rather than through force is more effective, longer-lasting and more empowering.

Specialised myofascial release for the pelvic floor is also available to treat issues such as  incontinence, scarring (from episiotomy, tearing or C-section), birth trauma, diastase’s recti, pain during sex, vaginismus as well as myriad other issues. These sessions are respectful, sensitive and discreet.

As a holistic form of healing, the mind, body and emotions are all considered; time will be taken to understand your individual health story and the herbal medicine will be formulated uniquely to you.

TRE®, Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises, are a simple set of exercises that trigger a natural tremor reflex in the body.

Tremoring or ‘shaking’ can release long-held tension patterns and promote new feelings of connection and ease within the nervous system and the body. In trauma, old parts of the brain are fixed in defence cascades of ‘fight-or-flight’ or ‘freeze’. TRE® is a safe, natural process which helps calm the nervous system and overprotective reflexes.

It is safe, enjoyable and accessible to do and can be taught and practised in-person or online with individuals and groups. More information on TRE can be found here.
